This 22 LR rifle is the newer version of my old bolt J C Higgins Marlin my grandfather gave me many years ago. I know one of these days it will stop working. Parts are long gone. During last years “RAT SHOOT” in Nevada (2017) I took both, just in case. Both worked flawlessly taking care of 1000’s of ground squirrels.
I still call both of these 22 LR’s “Varmint rifles”. A few years ago (2017) on my “Rat Trip” to Nevada I shot around 2,340 ground squirrels with the both of them and my 17 HMR.
The tube feed works much better and faster than the 7 shot mag of my 17 HMR. I have two Spee-D-Loaders that hold 120 rounds each to keep both 22’s filled up for a short time. By the time the get empty it’s time to let them cool and run a boar snake through.
Everyone I know calls the ground squirrels “RATS”. Rodent maybe a better term, but several small burrowing animals fall in that category. For those that haven’t had the chance to shoot “Sage Rats” they are about 3/4 the size of a prairie dog. For those that haven’t seen a prairie dogs they stand right around a foot tall setting up.
