223 Rem on a Factory Rem 700 VS SF, 26″ Fluted barrel with a Muzzle Brake

For the shooter just starting out, the 223 Rem is the best all round caliber.  My opinion.  With many manufactures of rifles and components, the choices are endless.  For myself and the 4,000 to 6,000 varmints I shoot a year, it’s hard to beat.

Over half of the thousands of 223 Rem cases I have on hand are military surplus LC (Lake City).  Because I prep all of my cases the same, I can use them in any of my 223 Rem rifles.  I do all of my reloading on either a Dillon 650 or 550, both progressive presses.  If I was a bench shooter I would think about loading them one at a time.  That takes way to much time.  Many of the groups I shoot are 1/2 – 1 inch in size at 100 yards.  That gives me MOPD (Minute Of Prairie Dog) out to 300 yards.  If varmints get farther away, I move the tuck.

This rifle is a factory Bolt Action Rifle with Stainless steel fluted barrel that I had a muzzle break installed.  The trigger was around two pounds and the stock was long enough for my long arms, I changed nothing.

The scope on this rifle is a  6 – 24 x 50 mil-dot.  Almost all of my scopes are mil-dot scopes.  In the West the wind blows all the time, it’s just how hard.  If you don’t like shooting in the wind, don’t come out West.  Some times it changes 5 times in direction before your bullet gets to the target.  But once you get the correct mil-dot to hold on, you got it.

Good site, I and my Shooting buddy, Phil Arrington, shoot Gunnison PD outside of Seligman Az. I use 2 Rem 700
SPS-V with thumbhole stocks and he uses a 6.5 Creedmore based on a Springfield 03-A3 action.
