2016 Trip #14

Kind’ a mostly on a scouting trip, but we did shoot some.  Tue we looked around and finally found a place to shoot North and West of Lusk, WY in some non working oil fields.  It was cold, but sunny and the dogs were out, there just wasn’t many.  We got about 2 hours of shooting with both shooting 60 plus each.   Until it got to cool and windy and the dogs went down.  I got some use out of my 221 FireBall on the first day.

The next day we found a place after about two hours of running around knocking on doors.  No one was home in a lot of places and some of the others said “We poisoned all of ours”.  We found one place way off the beaten path that was private land and miles from nowhere.  We stayed on the first field they showed us and did good for a small town.  I shot over a hundred in about five hours with my total ending up at 168 for the two days.

I switched between my 20 Practical and my Armalite Rifle, Design 15.  Better known as the AR-15.  I’ve had it for awhile and hadn’t got a scope for it nor had I added anything to it.  It’s a Remington R15 factory .223 Rem.  I had a scope from one of my rim-fires a 3 – 12 x 44 on it for a day or so trying to figure out what I wanted, it wasn’t that.  I like as much power (magnification) as I can get.  You can’t hit it, if you don’t see it.  So I took a 6 – 24 x 50 MD off of my 20 VarTarg and put it on for this trip.  It’s going to stay.  I’ll get the another scope for my 20 VarTarg later this winter.

The rifle was flawless in operation.  I had problems with brass missing the catcher that I got with the rifle.  Switched to just using a hat hooked to the scope, worked fine.  I will probably keep with just using the hat.  Another problem I had was the Remington R15 doesn’t come with a muzzle break, one will be on soon.  Kept loosing sight of my hits with the scope set on 24 power, and that is where I keep it for most shots.

The next day we headed to Rapid City, SD so my friend could pick-up some supplies; reloading supplies.

All-in-all it wasn’t a bad trip for the middle of October in Wyoming, it could have been a lot worse.  I did manage to test out another rifle.  We found a couple places to go back to in the spring and maybe even get in another winter shoot or two if we can get the weather to corporate.
