A friend of mine and his son stopped by from Michigan to do some shooting.  They had spent 3 days skiing and wanted to get in some shooting like they did last year.  Meet them in Limon, CO and we drove to Springfield.  A short first day and I didn’t get in much shooting, wasn’t a lot of prairie dog either.

The next day we didn’t do to bad, but the wind was really up, and a little cold.  We parted company around two in the afternoon; so they could get home to Michigan.  I stayed two more days after they left and Friday was just as bad, very little dogs out. It warmed up some Saturday after 1:00 but I left at 2:00 to get home, only shot 50 dogs all day.

In the Winter time when it gets dark between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM and the wind is up with just a little coolness in the air, the dogs usually go down by 3:00 PM.  That’s the thing about the West, the wind always blows, the question is how hard and how cold.

We set-up once next to about 200 wind turbines just North of Springfield.  I took a pic of the Old and New.. A sheep herders shack with wind turbines and a microwave tower.

Total dogs for me: 150.

I had two rifles with me but I shot mostly my 221 Fireball.  I used the 22 BR during the times the wind was blowing the hardest.

  • Total dogs for me: 150.
  • Rifles used my 221 Fireball and 22 BR
  • Total for the year: 460
