2017 Trip #5

June 1 through 4 with my friend Bruce, his brother and their friend from New Jersey, and myself.

Just got back from a trip to upper state Wyoming for about 4 days of prairie dog shooting. We shot only two full days, the 2nd and 3rd.  Because the 1st and the 4th were travel days with some shooting.

Even more except for some good winds a couple days in the afternoon the weather was great the whole trip.  We shoot many many dogs, around 1,500, actually 1,483.  I shot 381 of them keeping track with a counter.

I used my 22 BR, 223 AI, and my 20 Practical keeping most of my shots under 400 yards. Also some were as close as 30 yards.  Hence the ones I missed the most were the short ones, couldn’t get my scope dialed down fast enough.

The pics are mostly from the guys from New Jersey, some great shots.

We came across snakes, some good, some bad (the one in the hole is a rattle snake), and a Fox watching us from their hole.  Miles and miles of prairie dogs holes covering two ranches about 6 miles by 2 miles.  Sun was out most of the time.  Therefore we had to keep covered and drink lots of water.  When we first got to the ranch the chickens were having a fest of bugs off of my truck.

Good shots were had by all.  The guys from New Jersey shot a 223 AR (Brady) and a 17 HMR (John).  John shooting the 17 HMR had some long shots, once even getting a triple.  Brady using the 223 AR had some doubles and triples and liked taking follow-up shots.  Bruce, my friend from Denver did some damage with his 223 Savage bolt gun.  I had three shots in a row at 371 yards with my 22 BR.

  • Total varmints for this trip: 381
  • Rifles used on this trip: 20 Practical, 22 BR, and 223 AI
