Went with a Denver friend, his two brothers, and their friend on this trip.  The trip didn’t start off well, cloudy, couldn’t get on one ranch I wanted to, didn’t get in much shooting the first day.

Then it got real bad, rained all day the next day, stayed in the camper and went to a gun shop in Wheatland.  The guys did buy me 100 pieces of new 17 Hornet brass, I appreciated that.  I’ve had a hard time finding brass, so I made some from 22 Hornet, works fine, a little work.

The third day wasn’t much better, the sun did come out until late.  They finally got in some half-way descent shooting.  I kept them moving around so I didn’t get much shooting, only 100 dogs for the whole trip.

The trip wasn’t a complete bust, just almost.  I shot some factory 17 Hornet and fire formed a few rounds I made from 22 Hornet.  They all shot fine and I connected on dogs out to about 175 yards.  I had my 223 AI Rem with me for the long shots in the wind, I had a few.

  • Only 100 prairie dogs on this trip for me.
  • Rifles used this trip: 17 Hornet, 223 AI Rem
  • Total varmints for the year :  3,290
